Security guard walking a Houston warehouse dock post at dusk

The security guard cost in Houston starts with a number most quotes leave off: what the officer on your post gets paid. Houston security guards earn a median of $17.05 an hour, according to May 2025 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle 50% of them earn between $13.94 and $20.61. Everything else on your hourly rate sits on top of that wage. The employer owes 7.65% in Social Security and Medicare tax on every dollar of it, plus unemployment tax. Then come insurance, licensing, uniforms, supervision, overhead and profit.

That’s why 2 quotes from licensed companies for the same post rarely match, and why a low one deserves a closer look. Reliable Guard & Patrol Service prices each site after a free proposal. A gate post on a construction site and a 24/7 warehouse dock are different jobs with different math. You should be able to check our quote the same way you’d check anyone’s.

What is a security guard bill rate?

A security guard bill rate is the hourly price a security company charges you for 1 officer on 1 post. It covers the officer’s wage plus the employer’s payroll taxes, insurance, licensing, uniforms and equipment, supervision, scheduling, overhead and profit. The pay rate is the officer’s hourly wage. The difference is what you’re buying from the company.

Most buyers only ever see the bill rate. Ask what the officer on your post will earn as well. That 1 answer tells you whether the rest of the quote adds up, and it belongs at the top of any side-by-side quote comparison.

What Houston security officers are paid in 2026

Houston guards earn less than the national median, and pay inside Houston spreads wide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 29,250 security guards in the Houston metro in May 2025, with a median wage of $17.05 an hour against $18.28 nationally.

Area 10th percentile 25th percentile Median 75th percentile 90th percentile
Houston metro $13.30 $13.94 $17.05 $20.61 $23.14
Texas $12.96 $14.08 $17.30 $20.98 $24.40
United States $14.52 $16.93 $18.28 $22.21 $28.29

Follow the Houston row from left to right. A guard at the 10th percentile earns $13.30 an hour, and a guard at the 90th earns $23.14. Before a company adds a single cost, the wage alone can push 2 quotes for the same post that far apart.

Contract guards also sit low on the national pay ladder. The median guard in the contract security industry, which the BLS files under investigation, guard and armored car services, earned $37,350 a year in May 2025. Guards employed directly by healthcare and social assistance organizations earned a median of $44,920, and in educational services $44,250. You’re buying from one of the lower-paid parts of the market, so ask where your officer’s pay sits.

What the law adds to every paid hour

Federal law adds 7.65% to the cost of a guard’s pay, and unemployment tax comes on top. Every licensed company in Houston owes the same employer share of Social Security and Medicare. A quote that seems to skip the costs below deserves a question.

What’s added The rule Source
Social Security and Medicare 6.2% plus 1.45% of every dollar of wages, 7.65% in total Social Security Administration
Federal unemployment tax 6.0% of the first $7,000 each officer earns in a year, which a credit for state unemployment tax usually cuts to 0.6% IRS
Texas unemployment tax A separate rate set for each employer Texas Workforce Commission
Overtime Time and a half for hours past 40 in a workweek, unless the employee is exempt U.S. Department of Labor
Workers’ compensation Optional for private employers in Texas Texas Department of Insurance
Liability insurance At least $100,000 per occurrence for bodily injury and property damage, $50,000 per occurrence for personal injury, $200,000 in total Texas Occupations Code 1702.124

The insurance line is the one buyers check least. The state minimums in that table are only floors for holding a license. Read the Texas insurance requirements for guard companies before you accept a certificate at face value. Our own policies cover commercial auto, general liability and workers’ compensation, and your certificate of insurance can go out the day you request it. This section explains how the costs work. It isn’t tax or legal advice.

Why does an armed officer cost more in Texas?

Texas asks more of an armed officer before the first shift and at every renewal, and a firearm on your property costs more to insure. An armed officer works under a commission issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety. To get one, Occupations Code 1702.163 requires the applicant to finish the basic training course, pass a handgun proficiency exam and meet the state’s marksmanship standard.

Since a 2023 change to that section, applicants also have to complete the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, a standard psychological test, and submit the results. The state’s form for it counts only when a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist signs it. At renewal, a commissioned officer files a firearms proficiency certificate and completes 6 hours of continuing education. That time, training and testing all cost money, and the cost shows up in the hourly rate.

An unarmed officer in Texas is non-commissioned, completes Level II training and carries no firearm, and that fits most commercial posts. Armed officers are worth the higher rate at sites with cash on hand, high-value inventory or a real threat of violence.

Chart of weekly overtime hours on a 24/7 security post staffed by 3 or 4 officers

Why the hourly rate times 168 is the wrong 24/7 math

No officer works 168 hours a week, and federal law won’t let a company average overtime away. A post that never closes takes at least 4.2 full-time officers, and the schedule decides who pays for the overtime.

Round-the-clock coverage often gets priced as an hourly rate times 168, as if 1 person stood the post all week. The U.S. Department of Labor defines a workweek as “a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours.” Non-exempt hours past 40 in that week earn time and a half. Hours can’t be averaged across 2 or more weeks. So the same 168 hours cost different amounts depending on how many officers share them.

How the 168 hours are covered Hours per officer each week Overtime hours each week
3 full-time officers 56 48
4 full-time officers 42 8
4 full-time officers plus 8 part-time hours 40 0

At time and a half, 48 overtime hours cost the same as 72 regular hours. Every week. Those hours get paid somewhere: on your invoice, out of the company’s margin or, at a company breaking the law, not at all. Ask which one your quote assumes.

Reliable schedules its guards on 40-hour weeks and adds part-time officers where a post needs more hours.

For a monthly budget, a year of 24/7 coverage is 8,760 hours, which works out to 730 hours a month. Multiply 730 by the hourly rate on any quote and you have the monthly cost of 1 post.

Do nights, weekends and holidays cost more?

Sometimes, and the quote should say so. Fewer officers want overnight and holiday shifts, so some companies bill those hours at a higher rate. Federal overtime is separate. It applies to any officer past 40 hours in a workweek, no matter which day the hours fall on.

We staff posts at any hour, holidays included. Whoever you hire, get any shift premium written into the contract terms before the first holiday, along with the shortest shift the company will staff. If your risk sits after dark, start with what overnight coverage involves and set the hours from there.

Houston construction site security at dusk: materials stacked inside a temporary fence

Security guard cost in Houston by property type

The property sets the hours, the number of posts and the officer type, and those 3 set the cost. A construction site usually needs nights and weekends, when crews are gone and materials aren’t. Our breakdown of construction site security costs covers that case in detail. Warehouse costs follow dock hours. A vacant building comes down to how often someone checks the doors, and a shopping center to its trading hours plus the parking lot.

How many officers each property type starts with is a separate question, and the Texas staffing guide answers it. Price follows that count.

The security guard cost in Houston comes down to 3 things: the officer’s pay, what the law and the company add, and how many people it takes to cover your hours. Tell us the site, the hours and what you’re protecting, and we’ll send a free written proposal. Reliable Guard & Patrol Service has 150 officers on more than 100 sites around Houston, in English and Spanish, with no long-term contract required. FAQs

What makes security guard cost in Houston vary between quotes?

The officer’s wage is the largest part of any quote. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 29,250 security guards in the Houston metro in May 2025, and their pay covers a wide range. A quote can also come in low because it skips workers’ compensation, carries only the state minimum insurance or plans on overtime it doesn’t price. Ask which one applies before you compare.

Why does an armed security guard cost more than an unarmed one in Texas?

Texas requires an armed officer to hold a commission from the Department of Public Safety. That takes a handgun proficiency exam, a marksmanship standard and, since a 2023 change to Occupations Code 1702.163, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. At renewal, the officer files a firearms proficiency certificate and completes 6 hours of continuing education. A firearm on your property also costs more to insure, and the rate reflects it.

How many security guards does a 24/7 post need?

At least 4.2 full-time officers, because a week of round-the-clock coverage is 168 hours and a full-time schedule is 40. Federal overtime starts after hour 40 of a workweek, and the law doesn’t allow averaging across weeks. Cover the post with 3 officers and it runs 48 overtime hours every week.

Does security guard cost in Houston go up for nights, weekends and holidays?

At some companies it does, so get any shift premium in writing before you sign. Federal overtime rules apply past 40 hours in a workweek, whatever day the hours fall on. Reliable staffs posts at any hour, holidays included.

What is included in a security guard’s hourly rate?

The officer’s wage comes first. Then the company adds its share of Social Security and Medicare tax, unemployment tax, insurance, the state license, uniforms and equipment, supervision, scheduling and profit. Texas sets minimum liability insurance for licensed security companies, and workers’ compensation is optional for private employers in Texas. Ask the company to show you which of those its quote covers.

Is a long-term contract required to hire security guards in Houston?

No. Some companies offer a lower rate for a 12-month commitment. The term mostly gives the vendor certainty, so read the termination clause before you accept one. Reliable lets you book coverage by the week or the month, for a short job or a long one.
