What an unarmed officer actually does
An unarmed security officer observes, deters, and reports. They patrol your property on foot or by vehicle, check access points, verify who belongs on site, document conditions, and respond to incidents in real time. What they do not do is carry a firearm. Under Texas law, that single fact is the line between an unarmed officer and an armed one.
Texas regulates private security under the Texas Department of Public Safety and Occupations Code Chapter 1702. An unarmed guard is a “non-commissioned” officer. To hold that license, an officer completes the state’s Level II training and test, passes a fingerprint-based background check, and carries a DPS pocket card on every shift, renewed on the state’s two-year cycle.
A non-commissioned officer can carry standard gear such as a flashlight, handcuffs, and a radio, and in some cases pepper spray with the right certification and our approval.
