A warehouse security guard is important because a guard is the one part of a security plan that can act while a theft is still happening. A camera records a person on the dock after midnight, and an alarm reports a forced door. An officer on the property can walk up to that person and tell them to leave, or refuse to release a load that fails a check.
Warehouses are where U.S. cargo thieves strike most. In Overhaul’s 2025 annual report, warehouses and distribution centers were the most targeted sites for cargo theft, with 36% of incidents, and Texas ranked second among states with 20% of thefts, FreightWaves reported.
Not every warehouse needs one. A building that ships in daylight, holds low-value stock and sits behind a monitored alarm may do fine without a post. We’re a Houston security company with 150 officers on more than 100 sites, warehouses and distribution centers among them.
Your warehouse may be empty most of the week
Count the hours nobody is inside. A warehouse that runs a single 10-hour shift on weekdays is empty for 118 of the 168 hours in a week. That’s 70% of the time, including every night and both weekend days.

Those are the hours freight sits still. In a September 2026 review of Labor Day cargo theft, Verisk CargoNet named “physical exposure created when loaded freight sits at rest during closures or schedule disruptions” as the first of 2 risks. Every night your building closes is a shorter version of the same exposure.
The 5 incidents we publish from our patrol logs all happened between 11:20 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. The one at a warehouse began at about 11:20 p.m., when our officer on a perimeter round found an unauthorized vehicle near the loading docks and a person trying to get into a secured storage area beside the dock doors. The officer called dispatch, notified the site supervisor, identified himself and told the person to leave the restricted area. The person left without incident, police were advised, and the follow-up check found no forced entry and no missing inventory.

The release desk can’t tell a real carrier from a fake one
Not every warehouse theft happens at night. In a fictitious pickup, someone posing as the booked carrier arrives in daylight with matching paperwork and drives off with the load.
Verisk CargoNet counted 677 supply chain theft incidents in the U.S. and Canada in the second quarter of 2026, down 26% from a year earlier. Estimated losses still rose to $304.6 million, from $135.7 million. Fictitious pickups barely moved, from 165 to 158. CargoNet said physical thefts of loaded equipment fell significantly, particularly in California and Texas, while schemes built on business email compromise or shipment misdirection “remained comparatively stable.”
A gate system can’t catch that, because the truck matches the booking. A person has a far better chance, by calling the carrier at the phone number on its federal FMCSA record before the trailer moves, and refusing to release the load if the answer doesn’t match. What a guard can do under Texas law
A recording camera can’t tell anyone to leave. An officer can. Under Texas Penal Code Section 30.05, a person who stays on property after receiving notice to depart commits criminal trespass. That notice can be spoken by the owner or by “someone with apparent authority to act for the owner.” Write that authority into your post orders, so the officer’s notice speaks for you.
The limits matter as much as the authority. A licensed security officer in Texas has the same arrest power as any private person. The main rule, Article 14.01(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, allows an arrest without a warrant for a felony or “an offense against the public peace” committed in the person’s presence or view. So the officer’s job is to deter, observe, call police and write it down. Holding a trailer is different from holding a person: an officer can refuse to release your freight under your post orders without detaining the driver. Your insurance policy may require a security service
Some commercial property policies make a guard service a condition of coverage. ISO’s Protective Safeguards endorsement, form CP 04 11, lists protections by symbol. Symbol P-3 is a “Security Service, with a recording system or watch clock, making hourly rounds covering the entire building, when the premises are not in actual operation.”
If P-3 is on your policy schedule, you’ve agreed to keep that service in complete working order and to notify the insurer if you know it’s suspended. The form then excludes loss or damage caused by or resulting from fire if, before the fire, you failed those conditions. When a warehouse doesn’t need a guard
A guard costs more each month than an alarm or cameras, so a post should cover a risk those can’t. A building that ships in daylight only, holds low-value stock, has a monitored alarm and a fenced, lit yard, and carries no security service condition on its policy may not need one. Spend first on locks, lighting and an alarm someone answers. Revisit the decision if shrink starts showing up in cycle counts or something happens after hours.
Commissioned or non-commissioned: does a warehouse guard need to be armed?
Usually not. Texas licenses unarmed officers as non-commissioned security officers, who complete Level II training. Armed officers hold a security officer commission from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Getting one takes Level III training, a handgun proficiency exam and, since a 2023 change to the law, a standard psychological test.
Most warehouse work is verification, rounds and reports, and an unarmed officer handles all of it. We recommend a commissioned officer for high-value freight, cash on site or a site with a history of threats.
